Natural IVF cycle



As we all know, IVF treatment is one of the most widely used Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) by an infertile couple across the globe. IVF treatment is usually of two types that is natural IVF cycle and other is stimulated IVF cycle. ·         In older age women with no infertility issues.

·         Highly recommended in women with risk of ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome (OHSS).

·         When female partner is experiencing a tubal blockage as an infertility issue.

·         Suggest in those women who are having balanced FSH hormonal levels to undergo this process.

·         In females having poor or no response to fertility drugs

·         Does not want to take risk of multiple pregnancies.

·         Couple who have low budget for infertility treatment.

Procedure of Natural IVF cycle:

Natural IVF cycle is considered traditional as well as safe treatment procedure for treating infertility. It is an appropriate approach for those couples who don’t want to alter their monthly ovulation cycle. In this procedure ovaries are not required to undergo stimulation process. This cycle is considered entirely drug free but it is usually supported with minimal drugs usage. But there is no need to stimulate ovaries for production of multiple eggs. It also reduces the cost of fertility drugs which is also beneficial to those couples who have low budget as compare to conventional IVF cycle. 

Firstly, the female will undergo medical screening which will evaluate the exact date of egg maturation with the help of ultrasounds and hormonal examination. Once the egg is produced through normal ovulation then it is matured with the help of HCG injection for inducing final maturation of single egg. After that single, matured egg is retrieved from woman with help of a minor surgery of egg retrieval or egg pickup. After that same procedure is followed as in conventional IVF cycle that is male and female 

gametes are placed together for fertilization in incubator. Fertilization is achieved when the sperms gets penetrated into egg’s cytoplasm and fuses with it to form a single cell embryo. After the fertilization, when embryo reaches the stage of blastocyst then it is implanted into the uterus of intended mother with the help of a catheter. Progesterone supplement is also used in this cycle before implantation to support the development of uterine lining for receiving embryo. A pregnancy test is also done in 14 to 15 days post implantation of embryo to confirm pregnancy.

Pros and cons of Natural IVF cycle

  • Eliminates the chances of ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome (OHHS) in women who are prone to infection caused from stimulation.

  • Reduces the risk of multiple IVF pregnancies as with natural IVF cycle only single embryo is formed and implanted.

  • It also eliminates the cost of fertility drugs required for ovarian stimulation which is beneficial for those especially who have minimal insurance coverage.

  • It also reduces the side effects and complications caused from fertility drugs which can be harmful in rare cases and cause little discomfort or infection in some cases 

  • It is more comfortable cycle as it prevents mood swings and headache which are generally caused in conventional IVF cycle.

  • It also takes shorter period of time as time period for intake and working of fertility drugs is saved in this procedure.

  • It is also considered safe and secure procedure as it is performed with not altering natural ovulation cycle.

  • As it is considered as drug free IVF cycle, it can cause unexpected premature LH surging or ovulation as occurring naturally.

  • Egg formed via natural IVF cycle may not be healthy as compared to conventional IVF cycle.

  • Success rate of natural IVF cycle is also low as compared to conventional IVF cycle.

  • Availability of no extra embryos to be selected, freeze or use later in cases of failed IVF cycle or failed embryo formation.

  • It significantly has lower live birth rates per treatment cycle and unsuccessful pregnancies as compared to success rates of stimulated IVF cycle.
